Course Objectives:

The course curriculum provides the comprehensive knowledge of plastics, machines involved in molding, design considerations of machine and mould enabling the student to understand plastic raw materials, construction and functions of moulds and molding machine elements, required for plastic component manufacturing .

UNIT I : PLASTIC MOULDING 06Hrs

Introduction to plastic materials, synthetic, natural, behaviour of plastics towards heat and pressure, polymerization, types, commonly used plastics and their grouping, application of different plastics based on their properties, virgin material and recycling.

UNIT II: MOULDING MACHINES 08Hrs

Introduction, types of molding machines used for processing plastics, specification of machines, elements of molding machines, working of molding machines, capacities of machines directly influencing design of a mould, determining number of cavities.

UNIT III : MOULDING OF THERMO-PLASTICS 20Hrs

UNIT IV:MOULDING OF THERMO SET PLASTICS 08Hrs

Compression moulding, behaviour towards heat and pressure, recycling, types of moulds -Flash mould, Semi positive, Landed positive, Transfer moulds, Mould heating, Insulation, Advantages and disadvantages of compression moulding, Injection of thermos set plastics.

UNIT V: MOULD POLISHING 05Hrs

Meaning of mould polishing, necessity of smooth molding surfaces ,effect of polished surface on component, molding conditions, ejection, cycle time, asthetics, Polishing tools- hand tools,soft wooden sticks,oil stones, polishing papers and air grinders and reciprocating tools, felt wheels, diamond paste, sequence of polishing.

  1. Visit a plastic industry collect material samples and manufacturer lefelts to study properties, moldabality and applications of material and submit written report of 500words
  2. Prepare a list of some indentified plastics and components prepared prepare analytical study, applications and suggest necessary process modification submit written report of 500 words
  3. Visit a plastic recycling unit study the regrinding process and segregation, prepare a complete report and submit in writing within 500 words
