Basic Work shop Practice – I, Knowledge of Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Graphics-I

Course Objectives:

  1. Students to develop skill in bench work using hand tools, filing flat surfaces, checking flatness and measuring linear dimensions with vernier, making various fits.
  2. Students to learn drilling machine operations, job clamping, drill aligning, selecting proper speeds, drilling and reaming holes.
  3. Students to learn simple lathe operations like facing, plain turning, taper turning, knurling, use of different tools for different operations, selection of proper speeds.

  1. CO1 Able to do precision fit by filing the punch & die of a given job.
  2. CO2 Able to do marking & drilling holes, reaming tapping for required applications
  3. CO3 Able to do simple turning operations like facing, plain turning, step turning, taper turning, knurling

UNIT I: PRECISION FILING PRACTICE HOURS—30

UNIT II: DRILLING PRACTICE HOURS—18

Demonstration and detailed explanation of drilling machine, locating job, calculating appropriate rpm performing operations like drilling, counter boring, countersinking, reaming.

Hands-on-exercise

  1. Drill plate.
  2. Step drilling
  3. Assembly exercise (Drill, ream &tap)
  4. Assembly exercise ( riveting).

UNIT III: BASIC TURNING PRACTICE HOURS—30

Introduction and demonstration of lathe and functions of each part, scope of performing simple operations
on a lathe like facing, plain turning, taper turning, knurling, operations , turning tool nomenclature & sharpening of tools.

Hands-on-exercise

  1. Spindle turning
  2. Rods for studs
  3. Pin punch turning
  4. Centre punch turning
  5. Gauge turning
