UNIT I: INTRODUCTION TO MATERIAL SCIENCE 04 Hrs

Materials, Classifications, Metals, Non Metals, Ferrous and Non ferrous Metal. Mechanical Property of material, Ductility, Malleability, Elasticity, Plasticity, Hardness, Brittleness, Resistance.

UNIT II: FERROUS AND NON FERROUS MATERIALS AND THEIR ALLOYS 18Hrs

Ores and metals, extractions of metals from ores and process, Dressing, Calcination -roasting, smelting. Manufacturing of ferrous metals, Blast furnace, pig iron, cupola furnace,
cast iron, properties, Pudding furnace, wrought iron, steel Bessemer converter, properties of steel and their alloys, Classification of alloy steels, Ferrous metal used in press tool, mould, Jigs & Fixtures, e.g. HCHCR, OHNS, Hot die steels, special alloy steel, carburising steel, Specifications, composition and their application, Non ferrous metals, their alloys and composition with application.

  1. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. To write in brief about different materials, their composition, sources and application in manufacturing articles and submit hand written report of 500 words.
  2. Visit heat treatment plant, collect information with regard to ferrous materials, details of treatment process, quenching media and process and submit a report of 500 words.
  3. Visit a painting and electroplating unit, study and prepare a report of 500 words emphasizing the process done on different metals.
  4. Visit a material testing laboratory and study different tests conducted and results obtained and submit a report of 500 words.

Course Delivery:

  • The course will be delivered through lectures and Power point presentations/ Video.
