Course Objectives:

  1. To enhance the understanding of polymer miscibility, blend characteristics and mechanism of toughening.
  2. To impart knowledge of materials and matrix systems used in polymer composites.
  3. To develop understanding of processing, properties and applications of polymer composites.
  4. To provide knowledge in analyzing and characterizing the composite material for various applications

UNIT-I: MISCIBILITY AND MORPHOLOGY(09hours)

Classification – study of polymer blends and alloys on the basis of miscibility – criteria for selection of polymer. Compatibility of blends: principles of solubility and compatibility, Compatibilizers. Thermodynamics of miscibility – mechanical compatibility – phase morphology, phase separation behavior – morphology of blends and its determinationelectron microscopy- domain structure

UNIT-II: RHEOLOGY OF POLYMER BLENDS (08 hrs)

Principles and methods involved in the preparation of different polymer blends-introduction to rheology of polymer blends – its relevance in processing – rheology – phase morphology relationships and their relevance – micro rheology – rheological models -solution, and suspension models.

UNIT-III: COMPATIBILIZATION METHODS (09hrs)

UNIT-IV: MATERIALS FOR POLYMER COMPOSITES (08 hrs)

Various matrix materials used in composites Glass fibres – forms or reinforcements -carbon and Kevlar fibres – inorganic fibres – polyester resins – epoxy resins – phenolic resins – other resins systems- curing of the resins – ingredients in FRP – carbon – carbon composites.

UNIT-V: PROCESSING METHOD OF COMPOSITES( 09 hrs)

Hand lay up – spray up – resin injection moulding – bulk moulding compounds -compounding of polyester machines – machinery and equipment – SMC, BMC compression and injection moulding, filament winding – pultrusion – autoclave moulding, matched die moulding – injection moulding and forming of thermoplastic composites.

  1. for 5 marks (Any one)
  2. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  3. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. Collect different polymer blends and composite videos, understand and write and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  2. Visit polymer Blends/Composite industries and observe all the process parameter and testing of different materials additives and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  3. Compare the product materials and specialty additives used in Blend/Composite industries and testing done on them. Submit hand written report of 500 words.
  4. Analyze different polymer Blend/Composite machine in our department. And write note report of 500 words.
  5. Study the test done in nearby polymer Blend/Composite industries available and collect the following information like structure, size, properties and applications, Price, handling procedures etc. The student should submit a handwritten report. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
  6. Motivate student to take case study on particular activity to inculcate self and continues learning, Submit hand written report of 500 words on selected case study

Course Delivery:

The Course will be delivered through lectures, classroom interaction, animations, group discussion, exercises and assignments.
