Course Objectives:

  1. To provide fundamental knowledge of polymer products.

UNIT-I: HOSE AND COATED FABRICS (08hours)

Hose: Components: tube, reinforcement, cover – formulation of compounds for hose – types – long length molded hose, machine made, handmade and circular Woven (BRIDED) hoses-Radiator hose-oil and petrol hose.

Coated fabrics: Fabrics, cements and dough- formulations – Manufacturing of Coated fabrics- Applications of coated fabrics.

UNIT-II: BELTS AND CABLES (09 hours)

Belts: Types: Conveyor belting, Transmission belting, V-belts

Conveyor belting – components, formulation, building, vulcanization -Transmission belting: types- flat belting, components, Manufacturing.

V-belts: types, components, formulations, Manufacture, and vulcanization.

Cables: Types: Components, Insulation, jackets – their formulations – Manufacturing of cables, corona effect.

UNIT-III: FOOT WEAR AND AUTOMOTIVE TUBE (08hours)

UNIT-IV: LATEX PRODUCTS (09 hrs)

Latex products: Preparation of latex dispersion and emulsion.

Dipped goods: formulation, compounding, manufacturing of Toy balloons, rubber band, gloves (industrial and surgical) – Threads-formulations compounding-outline of the manufacturing methods

Latex foam: Manufacture of latex foam – Formulation, compounding and manufacturing of pillows, mattresses and automotive seats.

UNIT-V: PLASTIC AND FRP PRODUCTS ( 09 hrs)

Importance of material selections for the designing of the plastic products with respects to general and technical requirements.

Manufacturing methods and formulations of PVC Pipes, PE films, floorings and cables. Outline of the methods manufacturing and formulation of FRP laminates- Foams- Water storage tanks. Wire & Cable Coating /Lamination, PE/PE multilayer film, FRP products like helmet, trays, plate, chairs etc. mould material & making, curing, part ejection & finishing. Note: the following activities or similar activities for assessing CIE (IA) for 5 marks (Any one)

  1. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. Collect different processing videos of polymer product, understand and write and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  2. Visit polymer processing industries and observe all the process parameter and testing of different materials additives and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  3. Compare the product materials and specialty additives used in rubber industries. Submit hand written report of 500 words.
  4. Analyze different polymer processing machine in our department. And write note report of 500 words.
  5. Study the mould design available and collect the following information like structure, size, properties and applications, Price, handling procedures etc. The student should submit a handwritten report. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
  6. Motivate student to take case study on particular activity to inculcate self and continues learning, Submit hand written report of 500 words on selected case study
