Course Objectives:
- To provide fundamental knowledge of the equipment and process of Banbury, Extrusion, two roll mill, Calendaring, Hydraulic press and Vulcanizer’s.
- To enhance the understanding of the significance of different moulding process
- To impart knowledge in chemistry, compounding , manufacturing technology, Vulcanization, properties and applications of different elastomers.

UNIT-I: INTRODUCTION OF RUBBER RAW MATERIAL (08hours)
Introduction -to the compound preparation and blank preparation for the subsequent processing,
A brief introduction to the raw material and their characteristics,
-Natural and Synthetic rubber with its structure, properties and applications.
UNIT-II: RUBBER MIXING AND PROCESSING MACHINES (09 hours)
Processing machineries used for mixing –
Two roll mill (open mill) – mixing mill, cracking feeding mill, warming mill, batch-off-mill. Internal mixer-(Banbury, intermix, kneader) continuous mixers.
Mixing sequences and parameters to be controlled for good quality mix in rubber compound
UNIT-III: CALENDARING PROCESS & COMPRESSION MOULDING (08hours)

UNIT-IV: EXTRUSION PROCESS (09 hrs)
Extrusion – types of extruders used – hot feed and cold feed extruders, constructional features of both hot and cold feed extruders, importance of screw and their design factors, L/D ratios. Principles and operations, process parameters, extrusion defects, causes, and their remedies, curing of extrudates.
UNIT-V: VULCANISATION TECHNIQUES ( 09 hrs)
Basic reactions involved in vulcanization, different vulcanization system such as conventional (CV), efficient (EV) and semi efficient (SEV) system, determination of cure time, curing presses used such as hydraulic press, tyre press, auto clave curing, hot air oven, steam curing and continuous curing methods such as liquid curing, fluidized bed curing, steam tubes and roto-curing etc. microwave curing method (continuous vulcanization).
