Pre-requisites:

Polymer science, Physical chemistry, Organic chemistry, Polymer material, Polymer processing technology.

Course Objectives:

Create the knowledge of different types of tyres, tyre components and its function,to impart the knowledge of tyre components production and to understand the various stages in tyre production and quality control

UNIT-I: TYRE COMPONENTS (09hours)

Classification of different types of tyre, based on application, different types of compounds and its functions formulation of different tyres, Compound design and preparation for mixing :Mixing operation- open mill & internal mixing Parameters Testing and dispatch of mixes: responsibility of mixing department.

UNIT-II: REINFORCING MATERIALS IN TYRE (09 hours)

Tyre cord reinforcing systems, reinforcing of nylon, preparation of plies, specification of number of plies Textiles in Tyre Industry : Cotton, Rayon, Nylon & steel cords, styles and construction, Basics of rubber – Fabric bonding necessities of stronger fabrics leading to bonding methods developments. Wet & dry bonding systems – dip and hot stretch process for Nylon. RFL-VP latex systems – and parameters of dip & hot stretch process for Nylon.
Surface treatment for polyesters & glass fabric. Metal coating for steel cord. Recent developments in Radical Tyre fabrics – Aromatic Nylons (Kevlar)

UNIT-III:TYRE DESIGN AND MECHENISM (08hours)

UNIT-IV: TYRE MANUFACTURING 09 hrs

Tyre building, green tyre, lubrication, curing method, post curing inflation, , Green Tyre preparation & curing: painting – Awling, Bag-o-matic and Air bag curing – mold lubrication- Bladder assembly bead curing rings, Services to the Bag-o-matic presses, Cure cycle, Determination of optimum cure of tyres by thermocouple study. Economics of curing, post cure inflation of Nylon tyres, cured tyre inspection. Finishing- inspection Defects of tyres – Tyre classification for defects – causes and discussions. Introduction to retreading of tyre.

UNIT-V: RADIAL TYRE

Introduction of radial tyre, major components of radial tyre, Green Tyre preparation & curing: painting – Awling, Bag-o-matic and Air bag curing – mold lubrication- Bladder assembly bead curing rings, Services to the Bag-o-matic presses, Cure cycle, Determination of optimum cure of tyres by thermocouple study.

Note: the following activities or similar activities for assessing CIE (IA) for 5 marks (Any one)

  1. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. Collect different tyre patterns from any tyre industry and identify the materials and write note on particular sample and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  2. Visit tyre manufacturing industry/tyre retreading and observe all the process parameter and testing of different materials and Submit hand written report of 500 words
  3. Compare the polymer materials and specialty polymers used in tyre industries. Submit hand written report of 500 words.
  4. Analyze different polymeric material in our department. And write note report of 500 words.
  5. Study the mould design available and collect the following information like structure, size, properties and applications, Price, handling procedures etc. The student should submit a handwritten report. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
  6. Motivate student to take case study on particular activity to inculcate self and continues learning, Submit hand written report of 500 words on selected case study
