UNIT I: RAW MATERIALS AND PRE- TREATMENT OF HOT METAL (CO1) 10Hrs

Steel and their classification, principles of steel making, classification of steel making process

Raw materials for steel making – Sources of metallic iron, Pig iron, Steel scrap, Sponge iron (DRI), Scrap proportion in charge; Oxidizing agents; Fluxes; Sources of heat; De-oxidizers and alloying additions- Si, Mn, Al, Ni, Cr, W, Co; Storage facilities – mixer (In active); Pre-treatment of hot metal – Acid burdening of blast furnace and external desulphurisation, Basic burdening of blast furnace and external desiliconisation.

UNIT II: LD AND OBM PROCESS (CO2) 09 Hrs

Layout of LD steel making shop (vertical section through a LD SMS), LD vessel, oxygen lance, lance design : the effect of supersonic jet on bath circulation in brief ; charge materials -hot metal, cold Pig iron, Fluxes, Heat (Sequence of operation),Characteristics of L.D. process

OBM process: Operation, Metallurgical aspects of OBM

UNIT III: ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE (CO3) 09 Hrs

UNIT IV: REFINING SLAGS AND THERMODYNAMICS OF REFINING (CO4 08 Hrs

Refining slags: Structural, Slag properties, Theories of slag – Molecular theory, Ionic theory. Thermodynamics of refining: Carbon reaction (activity of C in brief), Phosphorus reaction (brief), Silicon reaction (brief), Manganese Reaction (brief) , Sulphur reaction (brief)

UNIT V: SECONDARY STEEL MAKING PROCESS (CO5 08 Hrs

Introduction, Process varieties: Stirring techniques, Decarburization technique; Stainless steel making technology – A.O.D process, V.O.D. process

Secondary refining furnace – ladle furnace; vacuum treatment of steel -introduction, Principle, recirculation degassing- R.H. Degassing process, D.H. Degassing process.

UNIT VI: CONTINUOUS CASTING OF LIQUID STEEL (CO6 08 Hrs
