UNIT I: RAW MATERIALS FOR DIRECT REDUCTION PROCESS (CO1) 11Hrs

Direct reduction processes – Introduction, Definition of sponge iron, Sponge iron processes- Coal based DR process, Advantages and disadvantages of coal based process; Gas based DR process, advantages of gas based DR processes over coal based processes;

Raw materials: Iron ore- Characteristics of iron ore- Chemical composition, Reduction properties, Physical characteristics; Coal- Reactivity, Ash content, volatile matter and sulphur content; Natural gas

UNIT II: SPONGE IRON PROCESSES (CO2 08 Hrs

Coal based processes – Rotary kiln process: equipment, principle

Gas based processes: Midrex process- equipment, production of reducing gas, reduction of iron ore, cooling of end product; HYL process – process technique, production of reducing gas

UNIT III: CHARACTERSTICS AND USES OF SPONGE IRON (CO3 08 Hrs

UNIT IV: INTRODUCTION TO SMELTING REDUCTION PROCESS (CO4 09 Hrs

Introduction, Need of smelting reduction, History of smelting reduction, signification of smelting reduction; Classification of SR processes: Processes utilizing coal and electricity – single stage process, two stage process; Processes utilizing oxygen and coal – single stage , two stage and three stage process; advantages of smelting reduction processes , limitations of smelting reduction processes

UNIT V: RAW MATERIALS FOR SMELTING REDUCTION PROCESS (CO5 07 Hrs

Introduction, Requirements/characteristics of raw materials: iron ore, lump ore, pellets-pellet preparation, properties of pellets- low temperature properties, high temperature properties; Coalcharacteristics of coal, reflectance of coal, fluxes; concept of smelting reduction, Mechanism of smelting reduction of iron oxides

  1. Each student should submit any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before take up get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur.

  2. List the different gas based Direct Reduction processes (DR). Prepare and submit the hand written report on Midrex process.
  3. List the common Smelting Reduction processes (SR). Prepare and submit the hand written report on any one of the process.
