UNIT I: TENSILE, TORSION AND SHEAR TESTS 10 Hrs
Introduction, Definition of the terms Load, Stress, Deformation, Strain, Stress – Strain diagram, Stress – Strain diagram of Mild Steel, Tensile properties proportional limit, Elastic limit, Yield point and yield point phenomenon, ultimate tensile strength, breaking load, modulus of elasticity, percentage of elongation, percentage of reduction in area, Proof stressbrief explanation, Torsion Test, Shear Tests.

Creep-Introduction, Creep curve, Equi-cohesive temperature, Grain boundary failure, Creep test & creep testing machine, Metallurgical factors which effect creep-composition, heat treatment, method of steel making, grain size and environment. Fatigue test- Introduction, Fatigue test procedure and fatigue failure fracture.
