UNIT I: PATTERN 13 Hrs
Introduction, Difference between pattern and casting, Functions of pattern, Pattern Materials Selection of Pattern Materials, Materials for making patterns, their advantages, limitations & applications-Wood, Metal, Plastic, Plaster, Wax. Types of Patterns-One piece (solid) pattern, Split pattern, Loose piece pattern, Match plate pattern, Sweep Pattern, Gated Pattern, Skeleton Pattern, Segmental Pattern, Follow Board Pattern. Pattern Design Consideration. Pattern Allowances-Description of Shrinkage allowance, Machining allowance, Draft or Taper allowance, Distortion allowance & Shake allowance.

UNIT IV: MOLDING SAND CONTROL TESTS 06 Hrs
Introduction, Tests on molding sands, Moisture content test using moisture determining apparatus, Clay content test, Grain fineness test using a grain fineness tester, Permeability test using a sand specimen rammer & permeability tester, Strength test using a strength testing equipment, Refractoriness test & Mold hardness test using a indentation hardness tester.
UNIT V: MOLDING SAND PREPARATION, FAMILY OF CAST IRON & CUPOLA FURNACE 06 Hrs
Introduction, Steps involved in sand preparation, Muller Description. Family of cast iron -Brief introduction to Gray Cast Iron, White Cast Iron, Malleable Cast Iron, Nodular Cast Iron.
