UNIT I: INTRODUCTION TO METALLURGY; ORES, ORE DRESSING AND ORE SAMPLING 12 Hrs

Materials and their classification; define metal and its properties; define metallurgy and the main divisions – extractive metallurgy, mechanical metallurgy, physical metallurgy; Define native metal ore and ore dressing; Ores of commercially important metals such as Fe, Al, Cu, Zn, Pb , Sn etc and their chemical composition ; advantages of ore dressing; Brief description of important operation of mineral dressing operations ; Define sample and sampling , need for study of ore sampling, state the sampling operations –

  1. exploratory sampling
  2. control sampling ;

classify sampling operations –
Hand sampling

  1. Grab sampling
  2. Pipe sampling
  3. Fractional selection by shovel
  4. coning and quartering, essential features of mechanical sampling .

UNIT II: COMMUNITION (PART-I 09 Hrs

Communition and its objectives, classify Communition, principle of crushing, classify crushing operation, working principle and operation of Blake jaw crusher, explain the dodge crusher, and explain the roll crusher and angle of nip for roll crusher.

UNIT III: COMMUNITION (PART-II 08 Hrs

UNIT IV: SIZING; CONCENTRATION (PART-I 08 Hrs

Define sizing and importance of sizing, definition of screening, define mesh number and mesh size, explain the method of screen analysis by rotap sieve shaker, tabulate the results of screen analysis by direct plot and cumulative plot, Mention the factors affecting the capacity of screens, define concentration and its objectives.

UNIT V: CONCENTRATION (PART-II 08 Hrs

Define concentrate and tailing , principle of magnetic separator, explain the ball Norton drum magnetic separator , explain the crockett wet belt magnetic separator ; state the gravity concentration process , state the sink and float technique ; principle of tabling , describe the wilfley table ; classification , Evan’s classifier , pneumatic classifier ; principle of jigging .
