Pre-requisites:

Course Objectives:

  1. Understanding of drawing, which includes clear visualization of objects and the proficiency in reading and interpreting a wide variety of production and assembly drawings.
  2. This course envisages reinforcing and enhancing the knowledge and skill acquired in the Engineering graphics-I and Computer Aided Engineering Drawing.

UNIT I: CONVENTIONAL REPRESENTATION 09Hrs

Standard convention using SP-46 (1988), Materials like Cast Iron, Mild Steel, Brass, Bronze, Aluminum, wood, Glass, Concrete and Rubber. Long and short break in pipe, rod and shaft. Various sections- Half, removed,-Standard convention of Knurling, Splined shafts, and chain wheels-Springs with square and flat ends, Gears, sprocket wheel-Counter sunk & Counter bore.

UNIT II: DIALS 09Hrs

Pressure gauge dial, Dial indicators, Tachometer, Ammeter, Voltmeter and Speedometer

UNIT III: SECTION OF INSTRUMENTS 12Hrs

UNIT IV: PRODUCTION DRAWINGS 06Hrs

Surface roughness, Indication of machining, Symbol showing direction of lay, Roughness grades, Machining allowances, Machining symbols used in industry.

UNIT V: ASSEMBLY DRAWING OF INSTRUMENTS 36Hrs

Introduction to the assembly drawing, Steps involved in preparing assembly drawing, Details sequence in assembly, Preparation of details and Assembly of parts with sectional views of Water meter, Dial indicator, Pressure gauge, Wall clock, Parallel rule and Movement holder. (Front, Top and Side views).

UNIT VI: TRACING AND BLUE PRINTING 06Hrs

Suggested List of Student Activities:

  1. Each student should submit any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before take up get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. Select at least four simple measuring instruments. Get them approved by teacher. Measure and sketch them in a drawing sheet with dimensions.
  2. Select at least one simple measuring device, disassemble it in group of 5-6 students, Get them approved by teacher. Measure and sketch them in a drawing sheet with dimensions. Example- assembly of Water meter, Dial indicator etc.
  3. Bring Actual assembly of measuring instrument from workshop/industry, measure dimensions, sketch it and make 2D production drawing for the same.

The course will be delivered through lectures and Demonstration and practices

Note:.

  1. Students should use separate A2 size drawing sheets for practicing the graded exercises.
  2. Students should solve the assignment/activities.
  3. The sessional marks will be awarded on the basis of Graded exercises and assignment.

  1. Draw the conventional representation of the following materials

  2. Draw the dial showing its units and divisions of following instruments
    1. Pressure gauge
    2. Tachometer
    3. Dial indicator

Part B

  1. Draw the conventional representation of the following sections
    1. Full section
    2. Top-half in section
    3. Bottom-half in section
  2. Draw the conventional representation of the following terminology
    1. Surface roughness
    2. Roughness grades
    3. Machining symbols

Part C

  1. The detail parts of a Dial Indicator is given, Assemble the parts and show the following views to 1:1 scale. Show the important dimensions on the assembly drawing.
    1. Front view in full section
    2. Top view
    3. Right side view
    4. Follow the diagram from pdf.
