Unit I

Fundamentals of Welding: Introduction to welding, classification of welding processes, Arc Welding, Gas welding, types of flames, Soldering, Brazing, Comparison of welding with soldering and brazing, defects in welding, Applications of welding.

Unit II

Introduction to Materials: Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical, Magnetic & Chemical properties of materials, Ferrous materials, types of ferrous materials, composition , properties & uses of Nickel steel , 18/8 steel, HSS & Manganese steel, working of cupola furnace, Non ferrous materials, composition ,
properties & uses of copper alloys, aluminum alloys & magnesium alloys, Definition of composite materials, Classification of composite materials, Advantages & Application of Composite materials.

Suggested List of Student Activities:

Note: the following activities or similar activities for assessing CIE (IA) for 5 marks (Any one)

  1. Make Visit to nearest work shop ,observe the welding process and make list of real time components which are welded.
  2. Observe the I.C engine working in your polytechnic and study its specifications. List the parts of I.C. Engine.
  1. Observe the operation of turbine and pumps in your polytechnic.
  2. Make Visit to nearest Material testing lab and visualize the various properties of materials.

  2. Define Ferrous materials and list the types of ferrous materials?
  3. Draw the sketches of three types of gas welding flames OR Differentiate between Soldering and Brazing Processes?
  4. State the composition and properties 18/8 steel? OR State the composition and properties Nickel steel?

GUIDELINES TO QUESTION PAPER SETTING

  1. The question paper must be prepared based on the blue print without changing the weight age of model fixed for each unit.
  2. The question paper pattern provided should be adhered to
    1. Part-A: 06 questions to be answered out of 09 questions, each carrying 05 marks
    2. Part-B: 07 questions to be answered out of 10 questions, each carrying 10 marks. May be given sub-divisions(‘a’) & (‘b’) carry marks in the pattern of 5+5 or 6+4 or 7+3 or 8+2.
