Course Objectives:

To introduce the concept of welding, with the knowledge of material properties, I.C engine, casting, forging, rolling process, defects &their remedies, properties of fluids, cutting fluids and lubrication.

  1. CO1 Understand the process of welding, soldering, brazing processes
  2. CO2 Know the importance of various properties of engineering materials and their application in various fields
  3. CO3 Understand the working principle of internal combustion engine.
  4. CO4 Understand the different types of manufacturing processes.
  5. C05 Recognize the behavior of fluids for different flows.
  6. C06 Identify the methods of lubricating the various components.

Introduction to Materials: Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical, Magnetic & Chemical properties of materials, Ferrous materials, types of ferrous materials, composition , properties & uses of Nickel steel , 18/8 steel, HSS & Manganese steel, working of cupola furnace, Non ferrous materials, composition ,
properties & uses of copper alloys, aluminum alloys & magnesium alloys, Definition of composite materials, Classification of composite materials, Advantages & Application of Composite materials.

Unit III

Internal Combustion Engine: Introduction, Classification of IC Engines, working of Two stroke petrol & Diesel engine, working of Four stroke petrol & Diesel engine, differentiate between petrol and diesel engine, Definition of BHP, IHP , Mechanical Efficiency, Mass of fuel consumed, Brake thermal Efficiency & Mechanical Efficiency.

  2. Observe the I.C engine working in your polytechnic and study its specifications. List the parts of I.C. Engine.
  3. Observe the operation of turbine and pumps in your polytechnic.
  4. Make Visit to nearest Material testing lab and visualize the various properties of materials.
