UNIT-I CHEMISTRY OF MACROMOLECULES 9Hrs

Concept of monomers and macromolecules, Classification of polymers: high polymers, oligomers, homopolymers, copolymers, organic polymers, element-organic and inorganic polymers, natural and synthetic polymers – Functionality of compounds – some common natural polymers viz: natural rubber, cellulose, starch, proteins and polypeptides, nucleic acids etc.

UNIT-II SYNTHESIS OF POLYMERS: POLYMERAZITATION TECHNIQUES 7Hrs

Condensation polymerization -Addition polymerization: free radical polymerization, cationic polymerization, Anionic polymerization, Radical polymerization- Stereo specific polymerization -Copolymerization: block and graft copolymers-ring opening polymerization-polymerization through rearrangements-Process of polymerization: Bulk polymerization, Solution polymerization, Suspension polymerization, Emulsion polymerization, solid phase polymerization-Mechanism of above polymerization

UNIT-III POLYMER MOLECULAR WEIGHTS DETERMINATION 6 Hrs

UNIT- IV CHARACTERIZATION AND TESTING OF POLYMERS 14 Hrs

Basic concepts of various methods involved in testing of polymers and their applications: Infrared spectroscopy, Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Thermal Analysis: Glass transition temperature and melting temperature, Differential scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Pyrolysis gas chromatography- mechanical testing of polymers: stress -strain tests, creep tests, stress relaxation tests, dynamic mechanical tests, Tear resistance, hardness, abrasion resistance.

UNIT- V MODIFICATION OF POLYMERS 6 Hrs

Concept of modification, Classification of various modification processes: Plasticization: effect of plasticizers on glass transition temperature and on mechanical properties, effect of plasticizer on dielectric properties, – Cross linking or vulcanization: Vulcanization of rubber and its desired features of a sophisticated vulcanization system- blending or poly blending- reactions on polymer: cyclization, rearrangement reaction- interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN): simultaneous interpenetrating network, latex interpenetrating network, interpenetrating elastomeric networks, semi interpenetrating networks and their properties

Suggested List of Student Activities:

Note: the following activities or similar activities for assessing CIE (IA) for 5 marks (Any one)

  1. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur
  1. Go to nearest footwear factory. Collect various samples of shoe components with specifications and submit the report handwritten form in 2-3 pages.
  2. Collect two shoes of different styles. Compare the elements of comfort in these shoes and submit the report in handwritten form in 2-3 pages.
  3. Go to nearest footwear factory. Collect various samples of adhesives and prepare a list of quality parameters of these samples in handwritten form in 2-3 pages.
  4. Go to nearest footwear factory. Collect a pair of shoe and Prepare a cost sheet of shoe and submit the report.
