UNIT-I PRINCIPLES OF LEATHER FINISHING

Introduction of leather finishing, Classification of leather finishing, Characteristics of finish , Theory of adhesion, Gloss and Gloss retention, Different layers of finish film – Base Coat -Intermediate Coat – Top Coat – Property Requirement of Each layer – Theory of film formation, Water proofing of leather, Types of leathers encountered for leather finishing.

Note: The following activities or similar activities for assessing CIE (IA) for 5 marks (Any one)

  1. Each student should do any one of the following type activity or any other similar activity related to the course and before conduction, get it approved from concerned Teacher and HOD.
  2. Each student should conduct different activity and no repeating should occur.
  1. Collect the various types of finished leather. Identify the finish film and make a report of the basic property of the finish in 2-3 pages in hand written form.
  2. Visit the nearest tannery. Observe the various finishing auxiliaries and make a report on the uses of these finishing auxiliaries in 2-3 pages in hand written form.
  3. Visit the nearest tannery. Observe the finishing machines used in the tannery and make a report on operational guidelines in 2-3 pages in hand written form.
  4. Collect the various types of transfer foil used in leather finishing and make a report on operational guidelines in 2-3 pages in hand written form.
