Pre-requisites:

Basic knowledge of drawing, sketching and materials.

Course Objectives:

  1. Basic Design provides the framework for understanding Design as a new language by sensitizing students to the conceptual, visual and perceptual issues involved in the design process.
  2. To impart an understanding of design process and provide knowledge of the principles of design and elements. Exercises should complement tutorials and ensure the students learn to develop a series of compositions in two dimensions.

UNIT- I: (6 Hours)

Definition of various forms of Design. Art and Design, Materials and process. Psychology of visual perception. Aesthetics. Design problem solving.

UNIT-II: (6 Hours)

Elements of Design: Line – Types of lines, line direction, contour and gesture, line quality, line as value and texture. Shape and Form, Volume/Mass, Representational, Non- representational shapes, Natural forms, Geometrical forms, Organic forms. Space – limited space, unlimited space, conceptual space, visual space. Color – Light spectrum and optical color circle. Additive and Subtractive mixing, primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Properties – Hue, Value, Intensity, Complimentary colors. Cool and Warm colors, color schemes – Monochromatic, Analogous, Triadic. Emotional aspects of color. Color and space. Color as value. Light -Contrast, Brightness, Value scale, High light, Middle tone, Depth. Texture: Visual texture, tactile texture, texture as pattern.

UNIT-IV: (60 Hours)

Graded Exercises: Represent movement, rest, softness, hardness using various line types and medium. Represent contrasts using point, line, plane, volume, light, tone / value, texture etc. Analyze and interpret natural forms as geometrical forms. Exercises based on theory of colors.

  1. Prepare a color wheel and label primary, secondary and tertiary colors.
  2. Prepare a color layout in complementary color scheme.
  3. Prepare a color layout in analogous color scheme.
  4. Prepare a colour layout in triadic colour scheme.
  5. Prepare a colour layout in warm colour scheme.
  6. Prepare a colour layout in cool colour scheme.
