UNIT- I

COMBUSTION OF FUELS: Introduction, classification of fuels, caloric value – higher & lower calorific value, definition of combustion, principles of combustion, minimum amount of air required for complete combustion (by weight and by volume), calorimeter- bomb calorimeter, boy’s gas calorimeter, Flue gas analysis by orsat apparatus, Fluidized bed Combustion.

UNIT-II

COAL FIRING: coal storage process, Methods of coal storage, coal cleaning equipment’s, Process of coal preparation, selection of coal for thermal power plant, methods of coal firing, hand firing, stoker firing – overfeed stoker and underfeed stoker, Overfeed stoker – Chain Grate type and spreader type, Underfeed stoker -Single retort and multi retort.

PULVERIZED FUEL FIRING: Pulverized fuels, Distribution system – Unit system, Central system, Necessity of adopting pulverized fuel firing, Pulverized fuel burners, Classifications, Long frame burner, Short frame burner, Tangential burner, Cyclone burner, Comparison between pulverized fuel firing and coal firing.

BOILER MOUNTINGS AND ACCESSORIES: Introduction, Water level indicator, Pressure gauge, Safety valves – Lever safety valve and Rams bottom safety valve, Fusible plug, Blow off valve, Man hole and hand hole, Feed pump, Super heater, Economizer, Air preheater.

UNIT-V

BOILER OPERATION: Cleaning, Acid method, precautions, critical areas of failure, Warming up and cooling down of boilers, Level of water in boilers, Leakage of water during boiler operation, Boiler storage – wet storage method and Dry storage method, Furnace explosion, Automatic burner system.

BOILER MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS: Internal inspection of boiler, Presence of oil in steam drum, Heating side/Fireside of boiler, Inspection of external fitting, Non-destructive testing equipments, Failures of steam generators, Boiler accidents, Tubing – water tube boilers and fire tube boilers, Flame impingement, Man hole and Hand hole

  10. Explain the working principle of Babcock and Wilcox Boiler.
