Course Objectives:

The course should enable the student to:

  1. Construct simple circuits to determine response of lead, lag circuits.
  2. Construct simple circuits to determine the response of P, PI, PID controller
  3. Plot the unit step response and obtain rise time, peak time, max overshoot and settling time for a higher order system.
  4. Study root locus, Bode plot and Nyquist plot using software

Part A Hardware

  1. Determine the response of lead Circuit & lag Circuit.
  2. Determine the responseof lead-lag circuit.
  3. Design a relay driving circuitusing opto-coupler IC MCT2E.
  4. Determine the response of P&PI controller.
  5. Determine the responseof PID controller for step input.

Part B Using MATLAB / SCI Lab / C Software

  1. Generate a plot of y(‘x’) = e-0.7xsinwx
  2. where w=15 rad/sec and 0 < x < 15 use the colon notation to generate the x vector in increments of 0.1

  3. Obtain the plot of the points for 0< t <6n when the coordinates x,y,z are given as a function of the parameter t as follows:
  4. x=sqrt(‘t’) sin(3t)
    y=sqrt(‘t’)cos(3t)
    z=0.8t

  5. Obtain the mesh and surface plots for the function
  6. z = 2xy2/[x2+y2]
    over the domain -2< x <6 and 2< y <8

  7. Plot the function z = 2-1.5sqrt(x2+y2) sin(x)cos(0.5y)
  8. Over the domain -4< x <4 using 2-D contour plot.

  9. Determine the pole locations for the unity feedback system using MATLAB./SCILAB
  10. G(‘s’) = 150 / [(s+5))s+7)(s+9)(s+11)]

  11. For the unity feedback system G(‘S’) given as
  12. G(‘s’) = [30(s2-5s+3)]/[(s+1)(s+2)(s+4)(s+5)]
    Determine the closed loop response using MATLAB/ Scilab

  13. Using MATLAB software, plot the unit step response and obtain rise time, peak time, max overshoot and settling time for a higher order system.
  14. Using MATLAB/SciLab software, plot the root locus plot.
  15. Using MATLAB/Sci Lab software, plot the Bode-plot.
  16. Using MATLAB/SciLab software, plot the Nyquist plot.

Few Suggested Student activities-

Example 1

  1. Do Market survey on P / PI / PID Controllers available in the market and collect the following information like types, specifications, Price etc. The student should submit a handwritten report. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
  2. Take Quiz tests / assignments in Control system topics. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
  3. Visit YouTube or any other sites on current topics in Control systemexperiments. Listen to the lectures and submit a handwritten report and a soft copy (CD/DVD)

Example 2

  1. Do a power point presentation on current topics in Control system experiments. Documents have to be maintained as a record.
    1. Open Loop control system with example
    2. Closed Loop / Feedback control system with example
    3. On / Off-two Level control system with example

Note:-The student shall do any one topic in Example-1 and any one topic in Example-2 for the purpose of assessment. The questions set for assessment should be out come based keeping in mind the analytical and creative skills

The activity should be graded as
Exemplary:- 5 Marks , Good:-4 Marks, Satisfactory:-3 Marks Developing:-2 Marks, Unsatisfactory:- 1 Mark
