1. Terracotta:

Definition, describe the classification (porous and polished terracotta), properties and field of application. Explain the manufacturing of roofing tile and wire cut bricks with a neat flow chart. Describe the important tests on terracotta like CCS. List possible defects (black coring, bloating, exploding, fracturing, warping, voids cracking) in terracotta with the causes and remedies.

2. Earthen ware:

Definition, classification of earthenware with examples. Write the composition of different earthenware’s.Definition of engobe, need of engobe, specify the required qualities of engobe and typical compositions of engobe. Illustrate the recent manufacturing process and advances in wall & floor tiles, difference between wall and floor tiles. Describe various defects and their remedies in different stages of manufacturing (drying – surface cracks, warping, laminations & firing defects – stuck ware, over firing, sulphuring). Discuss the important tests like crazing resistance, colour match & abrasion resistance test.

4. Stone ware:

Definition, write the classification with examples, give the compositions of different stonewares. Explain the recent manufacturing methods (pressure, vacuum & centrifugal casting) of different fine sanitary wares and extrusion of stoneware pipes with neat flow diagrams. Describe glazing of stoneware pipes by vapour/salt glazing method. Identify the Common defects in stoneware, mention their causes with remedies. Describe tests on stone wares like hydraulic pressure, porosity, absorption, chemical resistance and thermal shock test.

5. Porcelain:

Definition, classification (soft paste porcelain and hard paste porcelain) with examples. Write the compositions for Bone china wares, its manufacturing (single firing and double firing) with flow diagram, properties and applications. Describe low tension and high tension porcelain, technical datasheet and applications. Explain the manufacturing of low tension insulator and high tension insulators (disc and bushings) with neat flow diagram. Describe the turning process of disc insulators and bushings. Discuss their physical, mechanical, and electrical properties and common tests conducted on insulators. Discuss the rutile and steatite bodies and produce a comparative statement between them. Define spark plug; explain its manufacturing with flow chart and properties.

  2. Surf the internet / media and make a report on different shapes of roofing tiles

  4. Visit a nearby whiteware industry and make a report on the manufacturing process.
  5. Collect/ prepare datasheets of stoneware/ Porcelain products available in the market.

Note: Student should prepare hand written report with minimum 2-3 pages and reports should not be copied from earlier batches. And other similar tasks can be assigned.
