1. Introduction to Refractories

Definition of Refractory, Discuss general properties of refractory. Classification of refractories based on chemical nature; acidic, basic & neutral with definition and examples. Classification based on operating temperature – low heat duty, medium heat duty, high heat duty & super duty with examples.

2. Phase Equilibrium

Define and explain phase, phase rule, double component system – alumino silicate & Magnesium silicate systems, triple component system – ferrous alumino silicate, lime alumino silicate systems. Interpretation of phase diagram for selection of refractory batch. Definition & explanation of sintering, vitrification and fusion.

4. Properties & Testing

Describe the effect of following properties on quality of refractory & their tests – Green Density & Fired Density, Porosity, Permeability, Water Absorption, Abrasion Resistance, Refractoriness (P.C.E.), Refractoriness Under Load, Cold Crushing Strength, Modulus of
Rupture (Hot & Cold), Thermal expansion, Permanent Linear Change on Reheating (PLCR), Thermal Conductivity, Spalling resistance, Erosions resistance and Slag resistance.

5. Applications

Applications of refractories in Glass industry, Cement Industry, Steel – Ferrous & non-ferrous industries, thermal power stations, sugar industries, chemical & fertiliser industries. Explain with diagram of arc furnace, blast furnace, coke oven, thermal boiler for power plant.
