1. Introduction to Ceramic Products & Processing:
Definition, Classification, properties and application of following traditional and advanced ceramic products with examples.
- Traditional Ceramics – White wares (terracotta, earthenware, stoneware and porcelains), cements, glass, refractories, abrasives.
- Advanced Ceramic products – Electrical & Electronic, Magnetic, Mechanical, Special Refractories, Optical, Chemical, Bio-Ceramics & Nuclear Ceramic Products.
2. Additives
Define and briefly explain the role with examples – Surfactants, Water, Organic Liquids, Flocculants & Deflocculants, Binders, and Plasticizers, foaming and antifoaming agents, lubricants& preservatives. Study the thixotropic characters.

4. Forming:
Illustrate the shaping process with sketches & constructional features of machinery for following process:
- Plastic Shaping -Hand moulding with potter’s wheel, Jiggering & Jolleying,
- Semi-plastic Shaping – pressing, extrusion, injection moulding and turning.
- Dry Pressing – study the Particle packing characteristics, outline the important parameters of pressing (powder, die & pressure characteristics), explain stages in pressing. Types of presses: Toggle press, Fly press/screw press, Friction press, Hydraulic press, Isostatic press andHot isostatic press.
- Casting – Slip casting (solid, hollow & Core) and Tape casting. Explain Surface finishing methods – Trimming, Smoothening, Grinding, Blanking, Punching and Laminating.
5. Drying & Firing:
Definition, mechanism of drying, classification of driers based on heat source, type of material (raw material / Product), list various driers, mode of operation. Describe Firing, biscuit firing, glost firing, sintering, vitrification and stages of firing. List various furnaces and kilns with their field of application. Discuss the general constructional features of drier and furnace.
