Pre-requisites:

Knowledge of Chemistry and chemical engineering processes up to 4th semester chemical engineering.

Course Objectives:

To provide practical knowledge for the study and analysis of certain basic parameters of water, grease, soap and oil which find applications in daily life. After practicing the structured experiments the student will be able to do open-ended experiments related to the field.

  1. Parameters of Water COI 15
  2. Parameters of grease and soap CO2 12
  3. Parameters of oil CO3 18
  4. Instrumental Analysis of oils CO4 15
  5. Open-ended experiments. CO5 18

I- Parameters of water. (CO-1. 15 Hrs

  1. Evaluate the acidity of water sample.
  2. Calculate the alkalinity of water sample
  3. Estimate the total dissolved solids in water sample.

II- Parameters of soap (CO-2. 12Hrs

III- Parameters of oil: (CO-3. 18 Hrs

  1. Estimate the saponification value of oil sample.
  2. Evaluate the iodine number of oil sample.
  3. Analyse the acid value of oil sample.
  4. Test the flash point and fire point of oil sample.
  5. Test the pour point and cloud point of oil sample

IV- Instrumental analysis of oils: (CO-4. 15 Hrs

  1. Determine the viscosity co-efficient of oil sample using Ostwald’s viscometer.
  2. Calculate the viscosity co-efficient of oil using Redwood viscometer.
  3. Examine the specific gravity of oil sample.

V- Open-ended experiments (CO-5. 18 Hrs

Course Delivery:

The Course will be delivered through lectures, classroom interaction, group discussion, graded exercises, assignments and demonstrations.

TUTORIAL: 01Hr/Experiment.

  1. Introduction to technical analysis practical’s and its importance and safety precautions. maintenance of cleanliness and orderliness of chemical reagents in the laboratory.
  2. Maintenance of apparatus and equipments.
  3. Follow of Do’s and Don’ts.
  4. Maintenance of data recording in the record book.
  5. Write the procedure of the experiment before the commencement of each experiment.
  6. Strict following of instructions given at time to time by the staff in charge.
  7. Demonstration of each experiment by the staff in charge

Conducting of an experiment: 2 Hrs/Experiment:

Student must perform the experiments individually, satisfactorily and recording the data then reported to the staff in charge. After completion of the structured experiments the student has to be showing his creativity by referring the manuals and doing open-ended experiments.
