1. FUNDAMENTALS
- Potential energy, kinetic energy, Newton’s laws of motion Brayton cycle
- The relationship between force, work, power, energy, velocity, acceleration.
- General knowledge of different thermodynamics Laws, Process, pressure, volume diagram, gas equation and work done during the process.
- General knowledge of thermo-dynamic laws related to internal combustion engines.
- Knowledge of internal and external combustion heat engines.
- General knowledge of otto cycle and the relationship between volume, temperature and pressure.
- A general knowledge of terms used in theory of piston engine such as piston displacement and compression ratio, calculation of parameters from 46 given data.
- Knowledge of various efficiencies involved in internal combustion engines. (Mechanical, thermal andvolumetric)
- Operating principle and difference between two stroke & four stroke engines,otto and diesel engine merits and demerits.
- Introduction, Principle & performances: Introduction to jet engine, working cycle, comparison between PE and JE. Engine performance, thrust calculation, gross thrust, net thrust, choked nozzle, thrust distribution, thrust horse power, ESHP, specific fuel consumption, factors effecting engine performance.
- Constructional arrangement and operation of turbojet turbofan, turbo shaft, turboprop.
2. ENGINE PERFORMANCE
- Knowledge of various factors, affecting the engine performance.
- Classification of I.C. engines, on the basis of cylinder arrangement, cooling systems & no. of strokes per cycle.
- Identification & designation of reciprocating engines.
- Power calculation and measurement, factors affecting engine power, mixture/leaning, preignition.
- Gross thrust, net thrust, choked nozzle thrust, thrust distribution
- Resultant thrust, thrust horsepower, equivalent shaft horsepower, specific fuel consumption.
- Engine efficiencies
- By-pass ratio and engine pressure ratio.
- Engine ratings, static thrust, influence of speed, altitude and hot climate, flat rating, limitations.
