Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify different plastics and their processing methods.
  • Classify various composites and outline their applications.
  • Define Hooks law for various laminas and obtain solution for engineering constants.
  • Illustrate the macro mechanical behavior of a laminate.
  • Identify manufacturing techniques of composites.
  • Classify various defects in composites and select NDT methods.

Unit 2

Introduction to Composite Materials
Definition, Classification, Types of matrices material and, reinforcements, Characteristics and selection, Fiber composites, laminated composites, applications, Particulate composites, Prepegs and sandwich construction.

Unit 3

Macro Mechanics of a Lamina
Hooke’s law for different types of materials, number of elastic constants, derivation of nine independent constants for orthotropic material, two – dimensional relationship of compliance and stiffness matrix, Hooke’s law for two-dimensional angle lamina, engineering constants -Numerical problems, invariant properties, Stress-strain relations for lamina of arbitrary orientation, numerical problems.

Unit 5

Manufacturing Layup and curing
Open and closed mould processing, Hand lay up techniques, Bag moulding and filament winding. Pultrusion, Pulforming, Thermoforming, Injection moulding, Cutting, Machining and joining, tooling, Quality assurance

Unit 6

Testing of composites
Material qualification, Types of defects, NDT methods.
