Course Outcomes:

Learner will be able to

  1. Demonstrate understanding of metal cutting principles and mechanism
  2. Identify cutting tool geometry of single point and multipoint cutting tool
  3. Demonstrate various concepts of sheet metal forming operations
  4. Demonstrate concepts and use of jigs and fixtures
  5. Illustrate various non-traditional machining techniques
  6. Illustrate concepts and applications of additive manufacturing

Module 1

Metal Cutting:

  1. Features of machining processes, concept of speed and cutting, mechanism of chip formation, concept of shear plane, chip reduction coefficient force analysis, Merchants circle of cutting forces, expression for shear plane angle and coefficient of friction in terms of cutting forces and tool angles, Merchants theory-original and modified, effect of various parameters on cutting forces
  2. Different types of dynamometers and their operations, Tool life definition, mechanism of tool wear and measurement, preliminary and ultimate feature, factors influencing tool life such as speed, feed, depth of cut, tool material, cutting fluids etc., Machinability, factors affecting surface finish 16

End Semester Examination:

Weightage of each module in end semester examination will be proportional to number of respective lecture hours mentioned in the curriculum.

  1. Question paper will comprise of total six questions, each carrying 20 marks
  2. Question 1 will be compulsory and should cover maximum contents of the curriculum
  3. Remaining questions will be mixed in nature (for example if Q.2 has part
    1. from module 3 then part
    2. will be from any module other than module 3 )
  4. Only Four questions need to be solved.
