Joule’s Experiments; Internal Energy; The First Law of Thermodynamics; Energy balance for closed systems; Thermodynamic state and state functions; Equilibrium; The phase rule; The reversible process; Constant V and constant P processes; Enthalpy; Heat capacity; Mass and energy balances for open systems.

Unit II

Volumetric Properties Of Pure Fluids :
PVT Behaviour of pure substances; the Virial Equation; The Ideal Gas; Application of the Virial Equation; Cubic Equations of State; Generalised Correlations for gases; Generalised correlations for Liquids
