Course Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

    Study various crystal structures of materials

  • Understand mechanical properties of materials and calculations of same using appropriate equations
  • Evaluate phase diagrams of various materials
  • Suggest appropriate heat treatment process for a given application
  • Prepare samples of different materials for metallography
  • Recommend appropriate NDT technique for a given application

Unit 1

Structure of Materials
Crystal structures, indexing of lattice planes, Indexing of lattice directions, Imperfectionsin crystals – point defects, line defects, surface and bulk defects, Mechanism of plasticdeformation, deformation of single crystal by slip, plastic deformation of polycrystallinematerials

Unit 3

Equilibrium Diagrams
Definitions of terms, rules of solid -solubility, Gibbs phase rule, solidification of a puremetal, plotting of equilibrium diagrams, lever rule, Iron-iron carbide equilibriumdiagram, critical temperatures, solidification and microstructure of slowly cooled steels,non-equilibrium cooling of steels, property variation with microstructures, classificationand application of steels,, specification of steels, transformation products of austenite,TTT diagram, critical cooling rate, CCT diagram

Heat Treatment
Heat treatment of steels, cooling media, annealing processes, normalizing, hardening,tempering, quenching and hardenability, surface hardening processes- nitriding, carbonitriding,flame hardening, induction hardening

Strengthening Mechanisms and Non-destructive Testing
Refinement of grain size, cold working/strain hardening, solid solution strengthening,dispersion strengthening, Precipitation hardening

Magnetic particle inspection, dyepenetrant inspection, ultrasonic inspection, radiography, eddy current testing, acousticemission inspection.
