Course outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to

  • Analyze the structure of materials at different levels
  • Understand concept of mechanical behaviour of materials and calculations of same using appropriate equations
  • Explain the concept of phase and phase diagram and understand the basic terminologies associated with metallurgy
  • Understand and suggest the heat treatment process and types
  • Prepare samples of different materials for metallography
  • Understand the strengthening mechanisms and suggest appropriate NDT technique

Unit 1

Structure of Materials Crystal structures, indexing of lattice planes, Indexing of lattice directions, Imperfections in crystals – point defects, line defects, surface and bulk defects, Mechanism of plastic deformation, deformation of single crystal by slip, plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials

Heat Treatment Heat treatment of steels, cooling media, annealing processes, normalizing, hardening, tempering, quenching and hardenability, surface hardening processes- nitriding, carbonitriding, flame hardening, induction hardening
