Course Outcomes:

Students will be able to achieve & demonstrate the following COs on completion of course based learning

  1. Identify the active biocompouds in medicine.
  2. Use of various types of steroids and understand the characteristics of aromatic compound.
  3. Use of reagent to prepare the solutions in medical laboratory.

Unit I

Chemicals in Medicine 1.1 Introduction, chemicals in medicine & health care , define drugs and classification of drugs. 1.2 Specific action & examples of – Antiemetic, Artificial sweetening agent, Anti inflammatory, Antioxidant, Detoxication. 1.3 Pharmacological effect of – Analgesics, Antiseptic,Tranquilizers, Disinfectants, Antibiotics, Antacids. 1.4 IKS: Some well-known Indian plants and their uses – Garlic (Lasun), Onion (Kanda), Adrak (Ginger), Turmeric (Haladi) and Basil (Tulsi)

Practical / Tutoria Experiences

  1. *Analyse the given samples of commercial antacid by determining the amount of Hydrochloric acid they can neutralize.
  2. *Estimate the cholesterol from given serum.
  3. Estimate the bile acid from given substances.
  4. *Prepare percent solution Weight by weight and Volume by volume percent solution.
  5. *Prepare dilute solution (Single dilution)
  6. *Prepare 250 ml of 2% solution of acetic acid from 10% acetic acid.
  7. Determine molarity of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against standard solution of oxalic acids.
  8. Prepare different grades of alcohol and to understand their significance.
  9. Prepare the standard solution of oxalic acid.
  10. Perform five fold serial dilution of given KMnO4 solution.
  11. Perform five fold serial dilution of given KMnO4 solution.
  12. *Prepare anticoagulant bulb.
  13. *Determine pH of some solution obtained from known solution & varied concentration of acids, bases, salts using pH paper or universal indicator.
  14. Prepare buffer solution (single salt buffer) and determine its pH by its universal indicator.
  15. *Perform Dialysis of sol prepared in starch
  16. Perform Dialysis of sol prepared in Aluminum Hydroxide.
  17. Note : Out of above suggestive LLOs – ‘*’ Marked Practicals (LLOs) Are mandatory. Minimum 80% of above list of lab experiment are to be performed. Judicial mix of LLOs are to be performed to achieve desired outcomes.
