Course Outcomes:

Students will be able to achieve & demonstrate the following COs on completion of course based learning

  1. Differentiate between natural and synthetic fibers based on their chemical composition and properties.
  2. Use melt spinning technique and post spinning operation to make fibre.
  3. Use solution spinning technique and post spinning operation to make fibre.
  4. Apply knowledge of fiber properties to suggest appropriate uses for polyester, nylon, polypropylene, and acrylic fibers.
  5. Select suitable high performance fibre for industrial application.

Introduction to Man Made fiber 1.1 Define- Textile fiber. classify the textile fibers. 1.2 Essential and desirable properties of fibers used in textiles. 1.3 Characteristics of fiber forming polymer -molecular weight, molecular chain orientation, nature of crystalline and amorphous region. 1.4 Difference between natural and synthetic fibres. 1.5 Advantages and disadvantages of synthetic fibers. 1.6 Traditional method of fiber manufacturing (IKS)

Applications,poperties of polyester fiber. 4.2 Modified polyester: modifications in manufacturing process, physical and chemical properties, and application of microfibres,hollow fibre, hydrophilic fibre, low pilling, Flame retardant, cationic dyeable 4.3 Nylon-6: Raw material synthesis, quantitative analysis and end-group analysis of nylon fibre, average molecular weight, polymerization technique, process flow chart, spinning method, Physical, chemical properties, spinning parameters, additives and uses . Nylon-66: Raw material synthesis, polymerization technique melt spinning, Physical, chemical properties and uses 4.4 Polypropylene fibres: raw materials, spinning method, for LDPE & HDPE, difference in physical properties, chemical properties, and uses, use of pilot melt spinning unit 4.5 Acrylic fibres: Raw materials synthesis, quantitative analysis, polymerization technique, process flow chart, spinning method, Physical, and chemical properties and uses.

  1. *Perform Qualitative tests to identify the cotton fibers from the given sample.
  2. * Determine tensile strength of the fiber.
  3. *Determine size of the fiber in denier and micro denier.
  4. * Produce synthetic fiber on melt spinning equipment continuously and determine its denier.
  5. * Produce regenerated fibre using wet spinning equipment
  6. * Identify the Polyester fiber by qualitative tests -Burning, chemical, and microscopic
  7. *Determine the nylon fiber using qualitative testing, such as chemical, microscopic, and burning.
  8. * Identify the Nylon fiber by qualitative tests -Burning, chemical, and microscopic.
  9. *Determination of moisture regain of Nylon.
  10. *Use Chemical method to identify the given acrylicfibers
  11. Determine the tensile strength of aramid fibers.
