List of Experiments:

  1. *Analyze the tolerance of a given plastic product. ( measure the thickness of the product in the different locations and determine overall tolerance in the thickness)
  2. *Assess material properties and process for thin wall products used for food packaging (biscuit packaging)
  3. *Perform Drop tests of plastic products such as milk pouches, plastic chairs, and any commodity plastic product
  4. Design and prototype a plastic product considering design limitations using 3D printing or CAD software
  5. *Examine the different types of plastics in the context of plastic products. 1. Commodity product (toothbrush)
  6. *Examine the degradability of virgin and recycled plastic products over a period of time.
  7. *Determine the impact strength of plastic film by using a dart impact tester for packaging. ( PE or PVC film)
  8. Examine the different design and functionality of ribs in plastic parts.
  9. Explore plastic parts’ design concepts and applications of ball and socket joints.
  10. Draw a 2d diagram of a plastic bottle with rib, threads, and neck rim
  11. Create a 3D CAD model of a given plastic product
  12. *Determine the Cost of a given plastic product

Self Learning

Micro Project

  • Prepare a detailed report by applying plastic product design to modular plastic toys that can be assembled in various configurations.
  • Prepare a detailed presentation collecting the plastic bottles of at least three commercial suppliers and compare plastic product designs and each product.
  • Apply plastic product design concept for a plastic gear for a small mechanical device.
  • Apply plastic product design concept for a plastic container with an integrated hinged lid for food storage.
  • Select one of the composite products listed in your curriculum and develop a detailed process plan for its manufacturing. Include material selection, design considerations, and process steps.
  • Choose any one product from commodity, medical, engineering, electrical, engineering, automobile, and home appliances products and create a detailed report on its design, material selection, and manufacturing process. Include sketches, material properties, and justifications for the chosen method.
  • Design a product using thermoplastic or thermoset materials and create a prototype using a selected manufacturing process. Document the steps and considerations involved.

Assignment

  • Choose a plastic product and analyze the criteria considered in selecting its manufacturing process. Present your findings.
  • Explain the different methods used to manufacture hollow plastic products and Compare and contrast these methods in terms of efficiency, Cost, and product quality.
  • Outline the steps in selecting the process for manufacturing a composite automobile panel, considering weight, strength, and aesthetics.
  • Explain the materials and processes used to produce plastic bottles and chairs. Discuss the factors influencing material and process selection for these products.
  • Identify and explain at least five criteria used to select plastic manufacturing processes. Discuss how each criterion affects the decision-making process in a manufacturing setup.
