Course Outcomes:

Students will be able to achieve & demonstrate the following COs on completion of course based learning

  1. Apply yarn testing to analyze the various physical properties of yarns.
  2. Select fabric based on dimensional properties for various uses.
  3. Select various fabrics based on the serviceability of the applications.
  4. Compare the various fabrics on the basis of handle and comfort properties.
  5. Apply principles of tensile testing to determine yarns and fabrics strength.

Unit I

Yarn Testing 1.1 Yarn number- Direct Yarn Number: i) Tex, ii) Denier, Indirect Yarn Number: i) English count, ii) Metric count, iii) Worsted count, iv) Woolen count, v) Linen count. 1.2 Numerical calculations to find: i) Yarn Number, ii) Yarn Weight, iii) Yarn Length, Testing of yarn count: i) Yarn in package form- Wrap reel method, ii) Yarn in fabric form- Electronic weighing balance. 1.3 Twist- Types of Twist, Optimum Twist Level, Twist Multiplier, Effect of twist on yarn and fabric properties, Measurement of twist in yarn: i) Twist in single yarn by twist contraction principle, ii) Twist in double yarn by untwisting principle. 1.4 Yarn evenness, Variations, Types of variation: i) Random, ii) Periodic, Causes of unevenness, Effect of unevenness on yarn and fabric properties, Concept of U%, C.V.%.
