The detailed syllabus of material testing and metallography lab is as follows. <\/p>\n<p><h4>Course Objectives:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>To provide knowledge in fundamentals of various engineering materials and apply it in different fields of engineering applications.<\/li>\n<li>To familiarize with various applications of metallurgical microscope<\/li>\n<li>To identify the microstructure of ferrous metals (low carbon, medium carbon, high carbon, grey cast iron and spheroidal cast iron etc.<\/li>\n<li>To familiarizewith the non-destructive testing methods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><h4>Course Outcomes:<\/h4>\n<p>On completion of the course, the student will be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply theoretical knowledge of material testing to conduct tension test on UTM for ductile and brittle material<\/li>\n<li>Apply theoretical knowledge of material testing to find out the hardness of various treated and untreated steels using Vickers hardness tester &amp;Brinell hardness tester<\/li>\n<li>Apply theoretical knowledge of material testingto conduct Impact test and torsion test<\/li>\n<li>To study the Microstructure of Low, Medium &amp; High carbon steels by sample preparation using Disc polishing (fine polishing) and to find cracks in casting by conducting visual inspection, die penetrant test and magnetic particle test (NDT).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><h4>Module 1:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Study UTM &amp; and its various uses<\/li>\n<li>Conduct Tension test on M.S. bar<\/li>\n<li>Determine the compressive strength of brittle material using UTM<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><h4>Module 2:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Study of Impact Testing Machine<\/li>\n<li>Conduct Charpy test of MS bar specimen. Compute the values<\/li>\n<li>Conduct Impact test: To find out impact values (Izod) of M.S bar specimen. Compute the values<\/li>\n<li>Study the Brinell testing Machine and its use:<\/li>\n<li>To find Brinell hardness values of M.S. bars and aluminum<\/li>\n<li>Study Rock well hardness testing Machine<\/li>\n<li>Find out Rockwell hardness values of M.S. bars and Find out Rockwell hardness values of Aluminum<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><h4>Module 3:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Study Torsion testing Machine and its use<\/li>\n<li>Find modulus of rigidity, angle of twist and torque<\/li>\n<li>Plot graph- angle of twist Vs torque<\/li>\n<li>Find modulus of rigidity of steel wire from number of oscillation and torque<\/li>\n<li>Find out modulus of rigidity of the material of the spring (both compression and tension),Draw deflection Vs load graph<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><h4>Module 4:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Preparation of specimen for Metallographic examination of ferrous materials<\/li>\n<li>Conduct visual inspection testing<\/li>\n<li>Conduct die penetrant testing<\/li>\n<li>Conduct magnetic particle testing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><h4>Text Books:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>BediD.S. , Strength of Materials, Khanna Publishing House, Delhi, Ed. 2018<\/li>\n<li>Khurmi, R.S., Strength of Materials, S Chand and Co.
