The students will be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>understand the fundamentals associated to liquid agitation and mixing.<\/li>\n<li>gain basic knowledge in particle characterization namely particle size, shape and specific\u00a0surface.<\/li>\n<li>have working knowledge of particulate solids handling and mixing<\/li>\n<li>learn the principles of size reduction and screening<\/li>\n<li>understand the Principles and concepts of filtration<\/li>\n<li>understand the functioning of various prominent solid fluid operations related equipment namely gravity settlers, thickeners, classifiers, clarifiers, sedimenters and Cyclones.<\/li>\n<li>understand the working principle of electrostatic precipitation and flotation and their relevance in industrial practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I: Agitation and mixing of liquids:<\/strong> Agitation of liquids, circulation velocities, power consumption in agitated vessels, purpose of Agitation, types of impellers. Blending and mixing of liquids, suspension of solid particles, dispersion operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013II: Properties, handling and mixing of particulate solids:<\/strong> Characterization of solid particles, properties of particulate masses, storage of solids and mixing of solids, types of mixers, mixers for non-cohesive solids and mixers for cohesive solids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013III: Size reduction:<\/strong> Principles, criteria for comminution, characteristics of comminution, size reduction equipment-crushers, grinders, ultra-fine grinders, cutting machines, Equipment operation.<br \/>\n<strong>Screening:<\/strong> Screening, Industrial screening equipment\u2019s, general factors in selecting a screening equipment, comparison of ideal and actual screens, material balance over a screen and screening efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013IV: Filtration:<\/strong> Cake filters, centrifugal filters, filter aids, clarifying filters, liquid clarification, and gas cleaning.
