Various advanced characterizing techniques and their application will be studied.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -I : Introduction<\/strong>: Scope of subject, classification of techniques for characterization, macro and micro &#8211; characterization structure of solids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -II : Bulk averaging techniques:<\/strong> Thermal analysis, DTA, DSC, TGA, dilatometry, resistivity\/conductivity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -III : Optical &amp; X-ray spectroscopy:<\/strong> Atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -IV : Metallographic techniques:<\/strong> Optical metallography, image analysis, quantitative phase estimation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -V : Diffraction methods<\/strong>: X-ray diffraction (crystal systems and space groups, Bravais lattices, direct and reciprocal lattice, Bragg law, powder diffraction and phase identification, single crystal diffraction, structure factor, X-ray crystal structure determination).<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT -VI : Electron optical methods<\/strong>: Scanning electron microscopy and image formation in the SEM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course outcomes:<\/strong> At the end of the semester, the student should able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analyze the microstructure of materials.<\/li>\n<li>Apply various characterization techniques like XRD, SEM TEM.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the phases existing in the material.<\/li>\n<li>Analyze the image.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TEXT BOOKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Principles of metallogrphy laboratory practices \u2013George L.Khel- Eurasia publishing house (Pvt.
