The main aim of the course is to provide detail \u00a0concepts, operation and performance of transformers and 3-phase induction motors. A complete design procedure for the design of transformers and 3-phase\u00a0induction motors can be developed based on basic concepts discussed in unit- VI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appreciate the concept of operation and performance of single- phase transformers.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the methods of testing of single-phase transformer.<\/li>\n<li>Distinguish between single-phase and three-phase transformers.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the concept of operation and performance of 3-phase induction motor.<\/li>\n<li>Appreciate the relation between torque and slip, performance of induction motor and induction generator.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the basic concepts of design of transformers and 3-phase induction motors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Single-phase Transformers<\/strong> : Types and constructional details &#8211; principle of operation &#8211; emf equation &#8211; operation on no load and on load \u2013 lagging, leading and unity power factors\u00a0loads &#8211; phasor diagrams of transformers \u2013 equivalent circuit \u2013 regulation \u2013 losses and efficiency \u2013 effect of variation of frequency and supply voltage on losses \u2013 All day efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Single-phase Transformers Testing :<\/strong> Tests on single phase transformers \u2013 open circuit and short circuit tests \u2013 Sumpner\u2019s test \u2013 separation of losses \u2013 parallel operation with equal voltage ratios \u2013 auto transformer &#8211; equivalent circuit \u2013 comparison with two winding\u00a0transformers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3-Phase Transformers :<\/strong> Polyphase connections &#8211; Y\/Y, Y\/\u2206, \u2206\/Y, \u2206\/\u2206 and open \u2206 &#8212; Third harmonics in phase voltages &#8211; three winding transformers: determination of Zp, Zs and\u00a0Zt &#8212; transients in switching &#8211; off load and on load tap changers &#8212; Scott connection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-IV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3-phase Induction Motors :<\/strong> construction details of cage and wound rotor machines &#8211; production of a rotating magnetic field &#8211; principle of operation &#8211; rotor emf and rotor\u00a0frequency &#8211; rotor current and pf at standstill and during running conditions &#8211; rotor power input, rotor copper loss and mechanical power developed and their inter relationship \u2013 equivalent circuit \u2013 phasor diagram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-V<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics, starting and testing methods of Induction Motors<\/strong> : Torque equation &#8211; expressions for maximum torque and starting torque &#8211; torque slip characteristic &#8211; double cage and deep bar rotors &#8211; crawling and cogging &#8211; no load and blocked rotor tests &#8211; circle diagram for predetermination of performance &#8211; methods of starting \u2013 starting current and\u00a0torque calculations \u2013 induction generator operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-VI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Design of transformer and 3-phase induction motor :<\/strong> Transformer: Design concept \u2013 output equation \u2013 choice of windings \u2013 calculation of number of turns \u2013 length of mean turn of winding &#8211; calculation of resistance and leakage reactance.
