Generators \u2013 I<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Principle of operation \u2013 E.M.F equation- armature windings \u2013 lap and wave windings \u2013 armature reaction \u2013cross magnetizing and de-magnetizing AT\/pole \u2013commutation process \u2013 methods of improving commutation \u2013 compensating windings \u2013 Interpoles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT\u2013III: D.C. Generators \u2013 II<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Methods of excitation- self excited and separately excited-types of generators build-up of emf &#8211; open circuit characteristics-critical field resistance-critical speed-causes for failure to self excitation-remedial measures \u2013 Internal and external characteristics of separately excited, shunt, series, compound generators-applications, losses and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT\u2013IV : D.C. Motors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Principle of operation \u2013 back E.M.F &#8211; torque equation \u2013characteristics of shunt, series and compound motors \u2013 armature reaction and commutation &#8211; losses and efficiency- speed torque characteristics-applications of dc motors. Starting by 3 point and 4 point starters \u2013 protective devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-V: Speed Control and Testing of D.C. Machines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speed control by armature voltage and field flux control \u2013 testing of DC machines &#8211; brake test, Swinburne\u2019s method \u2013 principle of regenerative or Hopkinson\u2019s method &#8211; retardation test &#8212; separation of losses \u2013 methods of electrical braking: plugging, dynamic and regenerative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT\u2013VI: Design of D.C.
