I Year II Sem.\r\n\r\n<strong>Prerequisite: Generation and Measurement of high voltages<\/strong>\r\n<strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>To know different testing methods for high voltage apparatus.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>To know various standards for various kind of high voltage tests.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>To know the procedures to measure the partial discharges in high voltage apparatus.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>To know the causes for failure of insulators.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> After Completion of this course, student will be able to\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Have knowledge on various types of high voltage testing on high voltage apparatus.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Follow the various standards for best practice high voltage tests.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Have basic ideas to avoid the failures occur in insulators.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>UNIT- I: Non Destructive Testing Techniques :<\/strong> Measurement of DC Resistivity \u2013 Dielectric loss and dielectric constant of insulating materials \u2013 Schering bridge method \u2013 Transformer ration arm bridge for high voltage and high current applications \u2013 null detectors\r\n\r\n<strong>UNIT- II: High Voltage Testing of Power Apparatus:<\/strong> Need for testing standards \u2013 Standards for porcelain \/ Glass insulator \u2013 Classification of porcelain \/ glass insulator tests &#8211; Tests for cap and pin porcelain\/ Glass insulators. High voltage AC testing methods, power frequency tests &#8211; Over voltage tests on insulators, Isolators, Circuit Breakers and power cables.\r\n\r\n<strong>UNIT- III: Artificial Contamination Tests:<\/strong> Contamination flashover phenomena \u2013 Contamination Severity &#8211; Artificial contamination tests &#8211; Laboratory Testing versus in-Service Performance \u2013 Case study. Impulse Testing: Impulse testing of transformers \u2013 Surge diverters \u2013 and other apparatus.\r\n\r\n<strong>UNIT- IV: Partial Discharge Measurement :<\/strong> PD equivalent model &#8211; PD currents-PD currents PD measuring circuits \u2013 Straight and balanced detectors &#8211; Location and estimation of PD in power apparatus &#8211; PD measurement by non electrical methods &#8211; Calibration of PD detectors. RIV Measurements: Radio Interference \u2013 RIV &#8211; Measurement of RI and RIV in laboratories and in field Different test arrangements and their limitations.\r\n\r\n<strong>UNIT- V: Insulators Fail:<\/strong> Handling \u2013 Vandalism \u2013 Quality control \u2013 Application problems Detecting defective Non Ceramic insulators.
