I Year I Sem.<br \/>\n<strong>Prerequisite: Electromagnetic Fields<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To gain in-depth knowledge on characteristics and behavior of dielectrics under static and alternating fields.<\/li>\n<li>To study the breakdown mechanism of gaseous, liquid and solid dielectrics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> After the completion of this course, the student will be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Know the properties of various dielectric materials.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the fundamental behavior of gaseous, liquid, and solid dielectrics.<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize the breakdown phenomenon of dielectric materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Unit-I: Dielectrics and Insulating Material:<\/strong> Review of Dielectric Phenomenon: Complex permittivity \u2013 Polarization \u2013 Relaxation and resonant models. Solid, Liquid and Gaseous insulating materials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit-II: Properties of Dielectrics and Insulating Materials:<\/strong> Physical Thermal &amp; Electrical propertiesClassification of Insulating Materials, Solid Materials: Organic Fiber materials Ceramics &amp; Synthetic polymeric and their applications. Liquid Materials: Insulating oils their properties and applications. Gaseous Materials: Air and SF6 \u2013 applications in electrical apparatus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit-III: Breakdown Phenomenon \u2013 I:<\/strong> Insulation and decay process-transition from self sustained discharges to breakdown. Townsend and streamer discharge paschen\u2019s law penning effect-Time lags-Surge breakdown voltage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit-IV: Breakdown Phenomenon \u2013 II:<\/strong> Breakdown in non uniform fields-Vacuum insulation and vacuum breakdown.
