At the end of the\u00a0course, the participants are expected to have fair understanding of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basics of Finite Element Analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Available material models for structural materials, soils and interfaces\/joints.<\/li>\n<li>Modeling of engineering systems and Soil\u2013Structure Interaction (SSI).<\/li>\n<li>Importance of interfaces and joints on the behavior of engineering systems.<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of material model in finite element method and applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> At the end of the course, the student will be able to, Apply finite element\u00a0method to solve problems in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Formulate\u00a0and solve problems in one dimensional structures including trusses, beams and frames.\u00a0Formulate FE characteristic equations for two dimensional elements and analyze plain stress,\u00a0plain strain, axi-symmetric and plate bending problems. Implement and solve the finite\u00a0element formulations using MATLAB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 I:<\/strong>\u00a0Introduction to Finite Element Method for solving field problems. Stress and Equilibrium.\u00a0Boundary conditions. Strain \u2013 Displacement relations. Stress \u2013 strain relations.\u00a0One Dimensional Problems : Finite element modeling coordinates and shape functions.\u00a0Assembly of Global stiffness matrix and load vector. Finite element equations, Treatment of\u00a0boundary conditions, Quadratic shape functions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 II:\u00a0<\/strong>Analysis of Trusses: Stiffness Matrix for Plane Truss and Space Truss Elements, Stress\u00a0Calculations.\u00a0Analysis of Beams: Element stiffness matrix for two node, two degrees of freedom per node\u00a0beam element, Load Vector, Deflection, Stresses<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 III :<\/strong>\u00a0Finite element modeling of two dimensional stress analysis with constant strain triangles and\u00a0treatment of boundary conditions. Estimation of Load Vector, Stresses\u00a0Finite element modeling of Axi-symmetric solids subjected to Axi-symmetric loading with\u00a0triangular elements.
