III Year II Sem. \u00a0 \u00a0 L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code:\u00a0MN601PC \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 4\/1\/0\/4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong> To introduce the basic concepts of surface mining, working principles of\u00a0excavation and transportation equipment such as shovel, dumper, bucket wheel excavator etc.\u00a0and design of opencast mine. Placer and sea bed mining are added objectives of the course<br \/>\n<strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> At present 80% of the coal production and significant proportion of\u00a0other mineral output is coming from surface mines and hence students get a benefit of\u00a0detailed understanding of various techniques of surface mining including operation and\u00a0maintenance of associated machinery as outcome of this course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I\u00a0Basic concept of Surface Mining:<\/strong> Status of surface mining in India. Selection between<br \/>\nsurface mining and underground mining, Preliminary evaluation of surface mining prospects;\u00a0stripping ratio \u2013 concepts and significance, mine life. Opening up of deposits with Box Cut:\u00a0Factors affecting selection of site of box-cut, Production benches \u2013 formation parameters and\u00a0factors affecting their selection<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II\u00a0Preparation for Excavation:<\/strong> Working principle of ripper and Scraper\u2014their cycle of<br \/>\noperation, application and limitation. Drilling, types of blast hole drills, performance\u00a0parameters of drills, estimation of number of drills for a given mine production. Problems\u00a0associated with drilling and blasting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III\u00a0Excavation and Transportation:<\/strong> Cyclic methods\u2014shovel-dumper, pay-loader, dragline.<br \/>\nContinuous methods \u2013 bucket wheel excavator, bucket chain excavator, continuous surface\u00a0miner, conveyors. Principle and operation of these machines, their advantages and\u00a0limitations, capacity calculations, maintenance.
