III Year I Sem. \u00a0 L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code:PE503PC \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a04\/1\/0\/4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives: This subject is intended to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide all the technical\/engineering inputs to the learner to choose or select suitable\u00a0materials of construction of chemical\/petrochemical process equipment, piping and\u00a0internals.<\/li>\n<li>Import expertise to the material so that it meets the specific life expectancy, by\u00a0reducing the shutdown frequency.<\/li>\n<li>Learn the techniques in minimizing equipment breakdown and increasing the onstream\u00a0factor.<\/li>\n<li>To gain knowledge in choosing\/selecting the material such that it withstands the\u00a0severe process operating conditions such as cryogenic, high temperature, high\u00a0pressure, acidic, basic, stress induced chemical\/petrochemical environments keeping\u00a0view the reliability and safety of the process equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcome: After the course, the students will be to<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Equipped with knowledge to prepare material selection diagram, evaluation of\u00a0equipment life and prediction of life of the equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Acquiring the abilities to carryout reliability studies.<\/li>\n<li>Ready to carryout equipment failure analysis and propose the remedial measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT &#8211; I\u00a0<\/strong>Classification of engineering materials, Levels of Structure, Structure-Property relationships<br \/>\nin materials, Crystal Geometry and non-crystalline(amorphous) states. Lattice \u2013Bravais\u00a0lattices, crystal systems with examples. Lattice co-ordinates, Miller and Miller- Bravais\u00a0Indices for directions and places: ionic, covalent and metallic solids; packing factors and\u00a0packing efficiency, ligancy and coordination number. Structure determination by Brag\u2019s Xray\u00a0diffraction method.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT &#8211; II\u00a0<\/strong>Crystal Imperfections-classification-point defects-estimation of point defects-Dislocations classification(edge\u00a0and screw)-surface defects -dislocation motion and its relevance to\u00a0mechanical and chemical properties \u2013stress-strain relationship and diagrams for different\u00a0materials(metals, non-metals, rubbers and plastics and polymers)-elastic and plastic\u00a0deformation-slip -stress required to move a dislocation. Multiplication of dislocations \u2013\u00a0dislocation reactions, effect on mechanical behavior of materials.
