III Year I Sem. \u00a0 L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code:PE503PC \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a04\/1\/0\/4<br \/>\nPrerequisites: Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objective:<\/strong> This course is to understand the laws of thermodynamics and their\u00a0application in the analysis of chemical and engineering problems and to calculate\u00a0thermodynamics properties of fluids and fluid mixtures using equation of state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Outcome:<\/strong> Student should be able to identify a system and apply the laws of\u00a0thermodynamics and should be able to estimate thermodynamic properties of substances in\u00a0gas or liquid state<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I\u00a0Introduction:<\/strong> The scope of thermodynamics, defined quantities; temperature, volume,<br \/>\npressure, work, energy, heat, Joules Experiments, SI units.\u00a0The first law and other basic concepts: The first law of thermodynamics, thermodynamic\u00a0state and state functions, enthalpy, the steady-state steady flow process, equilibrium, the\u00a0reversible process, constant-V and constant- P processes, heat capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II\u00a0Volumetric properties of pure fluids:<\/strong> The PVT behavior of pure substances, virial equations,\u00a0the ideal gas, the applications of the virial equations, Cubic equations of state, generalized<br \/>\ncorrelations for gases.\u00a0The second law of thermodynamics-1: Statements of the second law, heat engines,<br \/>\nthermodynamic temperature scales, thermodynamic temperature and the ideal-gas scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III\u00a0The second law of thermodynamics-2:<\/strong> Entropy, Entropy changes of an ideal gas,<br \/>\nmathematical statement of the second law, the third law of thermodynamics. Mollier diagram\u00a0and steam tables.\u00a0Thermodynamics of flow processes; principles of conservation of mass and energy for flow\u00a0systems, analysis of expansion processes; turbines, throttling; compression processes \u2013\u00a0compressors and pumps; calculation of ideal work and last work.
