III Year II Sem. \u00a0 L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code:MM612PE \u00a0 \u00a0 3\/0\/0\/3<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objective:<\/strong> This course is mainly designed to make the students understand the\u00a0importance of surface engineering techniques, scope, limitations and areas of applications.\u00a0This course also focuses on industrially significant coating techniques, selection and\u00a0evaluation of coating characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> at the end of the course, the student will be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the significance of surface modification processes<\/li>\n<li>Describe the principles of surface modification processes<\/li>\n<li>Identify the testing approaches to evaluate a modified surface<\/li>\n<li>Suggest a surface modification process for a particular wear situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I:<\/strong>\u00a0Importance and necessity of surface engineering; past, present and future scenario of<br \/>\nsurface engineering; classification of surface engineering processes; substrates and their\u00a0pretreatments; coating characteristics: coating thickness, continuity, hardness, adhesion,\u00a0porosity, and bond strength<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II:\u00a0<\/strong>Thermally Sprayed Coatings: Plasma spraying; flame spraying, detonation spray coating,<br \/>\nHigh velocity oxy-fuel spraying; cod gas dynamic spray process; thermal barrier coatings.\u00a0Factors influencing thermal spray coatings. Electrochemical coatings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III:\u00a0<\/strong>Diffusion Coatings: Process fundamentals, advantages, limitations and applications of<br \/>\ncarburizing, liquid nitriding, carbonitriding, nitrocarburizing, and boronizing.
