III Year I Sem. \u00a0 \u00a0L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code:PS501 \u00a0 4\/1\/0\/4<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong> Microbiology is always considered to be an essential component of Pharmacy<br \/>\ncurriculum because of its relevance to pharmaceutical sciences and more specifically to\u00a0pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n<p>This course deals with the various aspects of microorganism their classification morphology,\u00a0laboratory cultivation, identification, maintenance and control of microorganism, sterility testing and\u00a0biosafety measures.\u00a0The course also covers bacterial genetics, drug resistance and microbiological assays and microbial\u00a0limit tests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> Upon completion of the subject student shall be able to \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>know the anatomy, identification &amp; cultivation of microorganisms<\/li>\n<li>Perform sterilization of various pharmaceutical products, equipment, culture media etc.<\/li>\n<li>Perform sterility testing of pharmaceutical products.<\/li>\n<li>Perform microbiological assay of antibiotics, Vitamins and amino acids<\/li>\n<li>Do microbiological analysis of air, water and milk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT I<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a. Introduction to Microbiology<\/strong>: Origin, scope and discovery of spontanesous generation theory,\u00a0contributions of Antony Van Leewenhoek, Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch and Joseph Lister.<br \/>\n<strong>b. Diversity of Microorganisms:<\/strong> Prokaryotes versus eukaryotes \u2013 three domains of life (bacteria,\u00a0archea and eurkaryotics). A detailed study of bacteria, yeasts, molds and viruses including their\u00a0classification. Characterization and identification of microorganisms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT II<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Nutrition and Growth of Microbes:<\/strong> Nutritional requirements, Types of nutrient media and growth<br \/>\nconditions and Nutritional types based on energy source.\u00a0Isolation, cultivation (aerobic &amp; anaerobic) and preservation of microorganisms, physiology of growth,\u00a0bacterial growth curve, influence of various factors (including environmental factors) on microbial\u00a0growth, Enumeration of bacteria. Exponential growth and generation time. Bacterial growth in batch\u00a0and continous culture (chemostat and turbidostat) synchronous growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT III<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> a. Control of Microorganisms:<\/strong> General concepts, Inhibition of growth and killing, sterilization and\u00a0disinfection, antisepis and sanitation, mode of action applications &amp; limitations of physical agents\u00a0(moist and dry heat, radiation and filtration) and chemical agents. Various types of disinfectants,\u00a0factors affecting sterilization and disinfection, evaluation of antimicrobial activity.<br \/>\n<strong>b.
