II Year I Sem. \u00a0 \u00a0L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code: CE303ES \u00a04\/1\/0\/4<br \/>\nPre Requisites: Engineering Mechanics<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong> Students who take this class can expect to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop an appreciation for the properties of Newtonian fluids.<\/li>\n<li>Study analytical solutions to variety of simplified problems.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the dynamics of fluid flows and the governing non-dimensional\u00a0parameters.<\/li>\n<li>Apply concepts of mass, momentum and energy conservation to flows.<\/li>\n<li>Grasp the basic ideas of turbulence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> At the end of the course, the student will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply conservation laws to derive governing equations of fluid flows.<\/li>\n<li>Compute hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces.<\/li>\n<li>Analyze and design simple pipe systems.<\/li>\n<li>Apply principles of dimensional analysis to design experiments.<\/li>\n<li>Compute drag and lift coefficients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT &#8211; I\u00a0Introduction:<\/strong> Dimensions and units \u2013 Physical properties of fluids specific gravity,\u00a0viscosity, surface tension, vapor pressure and their influences on fluid motion pressure at a\u00a0point, Pascal\u2019s law, Hydrostatic law &#8211; atmospheric, gauge and vacuum pressure- measurement\u00a0of pressure. Pressure gauges, Manometers: differential and Micro Manometers. Hydrostatic\u00a0forces on submerged plane, Horizontal, Vertical, inclined and curved surfaces \u2013 Center of\u00a0pressure. Derivations and problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNTI \u2013 II\u00a0Buoyancy and floatation:<\/strong> stability of bodies, meta centre, liquids in relative equilibrium.<br \/>\nFluid Kinematics: Description of fluid flow, Stream line, path line and streak lines and\u00a0stream tube. Classification of flows : Steady, unsteady, uniform, non uniform, laminar,\u00a0turbulent, rotational and irrotational flows \u2013 Equation of continuity for one, two , three\u00a0dimensional flows \u2013 stream and velocity potential functions, circulation and vorticity,\u00a0flownet analysis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 III\u00a0Fluid Dynamics and Measurement of Flow<\/strong>: Surface and body forces \u2013 Euler\u2019s and<br \/>\nBernoulli\u2019s equations for flow along a stream line for 3-D flow, (Navier \u2013 stokes equations\u00a0(Explanationary) Momentum equation and its application \u2013 forces on pipe bend.
