II Year I Sem. \u00a0 \u00a0L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code: EI305ES 3\/0\/0\/3<br \/>\nPre-requisite: Nil<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong> Objectives of this course are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to introduce the basic principles of all measuring instruments<\/li>\n<li>to deal with the measurement of voltage, current Power factor, power, energy and\u00a0magnetic measurements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong> After this course, the student<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>gets a thorough knowledge on, different types of measuring instruments their\u00a0construction operation and characteristics<\/li>\n<li>measurements of electrical quantities through potentiometers, instrument\u00a0transformers, watt meters, energy meters, DC bridges and AC bridges<\/li>\n<li>To understand the operation of different types of transducers.<\/li>\n<li>To understand the measurement of non-electrical quantities like velocity,\u00a0acceleration, temperature etc.<\/li>\n<li>Applies the above concepts to real-world electrical and electronics problems and\u00a0applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT &#8211; I\u00a0Introduction to Measuring Instruments:<\/strong> Classification \u2013 deflecting, control and damping\u00a0torques \u2013 Ammeters and Voltmeters \u2013 PMMC, moving iron type instruments \u2013 expression for<br \/>\nthe deflecting torque and control torque \u2013 Errors and compensations, extension of range using\u00a0shunts and series resistance. Electrostatic Voltmeters &#8211; electrometer type and attracted disc\u00a0type \u2013 extension of range of E.S. Voltmeters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 II\u00a0Potentiometers &amp; Instrument Transformers:<\/strong> Principle and operation of D.C. Crompton\u2019s\u00a0potentiometer \u2013 standardization \u2013 Measurement of unknown resistance, current, voltage. A.C.\u00a0Potentiometers: polar and coordinate type\u2019s standardization \u2013 applications. CT and PT \u2013<br \/>\nRatio and phase angle errors<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT \u2013 III\u00a0Measurement of Power &amp; Energy:<\/strong> Single phase dynamometer wattmeter, LPF and UPF,\u00a0Double element and three element dynamometer wattmeter, expression for deflecting and<br \/>\ncontrol torques \u2013 Extension of range of wattmeter using instrument transformers \u2013\u00a0Measurement of active and reactive powers in balanced and unbalanced systems.\u00a0Single phase induction type energy meter \u2013 driving and braking torques \u2013 errors and\u00a0compensations \u2013 testing by phantom loading using R.S.S. meter.
