This gives the details about credits, number of hours and other details along with reference books for the course.<\/p>\n<p>The detailed syllabus for Mechanics of Solids B.Tech 2016-2017 (R16) \u00a0second year first sem is as follows.<\/p>\n<p>B.Tech. II Year I Sem. \u00a0 \u00a0L\/T\/P\/C<br \/>\nCourse Code: ME303ES 3\/1\/0\/3<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives:<\/strong> The objective is to learn the fundamental concepts of stress, strain, and\u00a0deformation of solids with applications to bars, beams, and columns. Detailed study of\u00a0engineering properties of materials is also of interest. Fundamentals of applying equilibrium,\u00a0compatibility, and force-deformation relationships to structural elements are emphasized. The\u00a0students are introduced to advanced concepts of flexibility and stiffness method of structural\u00a0analysis. The course builds on the fundamental concepts of engineering mechanics course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This course will advance the students\u2019 development of the following broad capabilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will be able to understand basic concepts of stress, strain and their relations\u00a0based on linear elasticity. Material behaviors due to different types of loading will be\u00a0discussed.<\/li>\n<li>Students will be able to understand and know how to calculate stresses and\u00a0deformation of a bar due to an axial loading under uniform and non-uniform\u00a0conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Students will understand how to develop shear-moment diagrams of a beam and find\u00a0the maximum moment\/shear and their locations<\/li>\n<li>Students will understand how to calculate normal and shear stresses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analyze the behavior of the solid bodies subjected to various types of loading;<\/li>\n<li>Apply knowledge of materials and structural elements to the analysis of simple\u00a0structures;<\/li>\n<li>Undertake problem identification, formulation and solution using a range of analytical\u00a0methods;<\/li>\n<li>Analyze and interpret laboratory data relating to behavior of structures and the\u00a0materials they are made of, and undertake associated laboratory work individually and\u00a0in teams.<\/li>\n<li>Expectation and capacity to undertake lifelong learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNIT-I Simple Stresses &amp; Strains:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elasticity and plasticity \u2013 Types of stresses &amp; strains\u2013Hooke\u2019s law\u2013 stress \u2013 strain diagram for mild steel \u2013 Working stress \u2013 Factor of safety \u2013 Lateral strain, Poisson\u2019s ratio &amp; volumetric strain \u2013 Elastic moduli &amp; the relationship between them \u2013 Bars of varying section \u2013 composite bars \u2013 Temperature stresses. Strain energy \u2013 Resilience \u2013 Gradual, sudden, impact and shock loadings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-II Shear Force and Bending Moment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definition of beam \u2013 Types of beams \u2013 Concept of shear force and bending moment \u2013 S.F and B.M diagrams for cantilever, simply supported and overhanging beams subjected to point loads, u.d.l., uniformly varying loads and combination of these loads \u2013 Point of contra flexure \u2013 Relation between S.F., B.M and rate of loading at a section of a beam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UNIT-III Flexural Stresses :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Theory of simple bending \u2013 Assumptions \u2013 Derivation of bending equation: M\/I = f\/y = E\/R Neutral axis \u2013 Determination bending stresses \u2013 section modulus of rectangular and circular sections (Solid and Hollow), I,T,Angle and Channel sections \u2013 Design of simple beam sections.
